PARTNERSHIP ACTIVATION
TikTok x Fringe
For the TikTok x Edinburgh Fringe Festival partnership activation, our approach centred on creating a visual identity that felt authentically rooted in the festival while remaining unmistakably TikTok.
Rather than simply applying brand assets to a space, we developed a graphic language that translated both identities into a cohesive, live environment. The result was a layered, colour-led design system that moved beyond decoration and became a storytelling device within the activation.
Design Rationale: The Five-Band Stripe Over Fringe Blue
For the partnership activation, the decision to introduce the five-band stripe over the core Fringe blue was a deliberate creative choice rather than a purely aesthetic one.
Representing the Spirit of the Fringe
The five bands act as a visual metaphor for the Fringe itself. Layered, vibrant and multi-disciplinary. The Fringe isn’t a single genre; it’s theatre, comedy, dance, music and performance art all happening simultaneously. The stacked colour bands reflect this layering of creative voices and experiences, much like the festival’s diverse programme coming together in one place.
Movement, Energy and Discovery
Unlike a flat brand block, the angled stripe introduces motion into the space. This was important because TikTok is a platform built on momentum and discovery and the Fringe is a festival of exploration and unexpected encounters. The diagonal progression of colour visually guides the eye forward, subtly echoing the idea of scrolling, uncovering and moving through content, core behaviours of TikTok users.
A Bridge Between Brand and Festival Identity
While the Fringe blue anchors the activation in clear brand recognition, the multi-colour stripe softens the corporate feel and leans into a more festival-led aesthetic. This balance ensured the space felt fun rather than purely branded, experiential rather than promotional and aligned with the eclectic energy of Fringe
Reflecting the Live Experience Design
The stripe language worked cohesively across the entire environment. Hanging parasols introduced theatrical layering overhead, while festival-style signposts guided guests along creative pathways through the space. A dedicated photo booth with a step & repeat backdrop created moments of expression, complemented by a branded bar and curated canapés that encouraged social interaction. A vibrant photo backdrop provided a dynamic content capture area designed with creators in mind. The colour bands subtly tied all these touchpoints together as one unified visual story.
Creative Expression & Inclusivity
The five colours also nod to the diversity of creators and audiences TikTok champions. Rather than a single-tone brand space, the palette signals openness, individuality and self-expression, values that sit at the intersection of TikTok culture and Fringe performance.
Photogenic Impact (Content-First Thinking)
From a practical standpoint, the stripe provided a strong visual anchor in photos and video, instantly recognisable in social content and a dynamic backdrop that elevated user-generated content. Against the solid Fringe blue, the bands create contrast that pops on camera, making every photo booth moment, cocktail shot and creator interaction feel more vibrant and shareable.
Takeaway Moments & Lasting Impressions
The TikTok x Edinburgh Festival Fringe partnership activation demonstrated how strategic design can translate two distinct identities into one cohesive live environment. By developing a clear graphic language rather than simply applying brand assets, the space became immersive, recognisable and commercially effective.
From large-scale environmental styling and spatial planning to on-site delivery, every element was managed to ensure clarity, flow and brand alignment. The five-band stripe system anchored the experience visually, while considered layout and guest interaction points supported content creation, audience engagement and brand interaction.
The result was a structured yet vibrant activation that balanced festival energy with brand presence. A confident physical expression of TikTok within the Fringe landscape, delivered with precision from concept development through to live execution.
